"Winter Light on Cliffs near Arbroath"

Oil on board, 80 x 60cm (100 x 80cm framed). £5,250
I lived in Arbroath for a while way back at the start of my career as an artist and often painted views of the cliffs and the harbour there. A return trip in January 2022 gave rise to this rendition of the area's rocky, sandstone cliffs.
I think a painter's technique should evolve as the years pass and this picture exhibits my on-going exploration of line in a finished picture. Normally we would associate the use of line with the beginning of a work - the sketching out phase. But here the drawing process is visible even in the finished painting. Drawing is increasingly important to me. The use of line helps me to describe the particular form of things and can lend an otherwise impressionistic painting a greater clarity.

This painting can be viewed at Greens & Blues Gallery in North Berwick, Scotland.
